Introduction
Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC”) is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. Description
Division:
- Noncommunicable Diseases Research (NCDR) & Strengthening Oncology Services Research Unit (SOSRU)
Main purpose of the Fellowship:
Under the direct supervision of the study principal investigators, Prof Dan O’Neil (Yale University) and Dr Maureen Joffe (University of Witwatersrand)
- Perform qualitative needs analysis research through in-depth interviews and focus group sessions with identified stakeholders (policymakers, tertiary and primary care providers, administrators, patients, and NGO representatives)
- Participate in, organize, and at times lead monthly stakeholder advisory group meetings
- Manage and jointly train fieldworkers in breast cancer screening, data collection, and patient navigation
- Participate with stakeholders in the co-creation of an intervention aimed at increasing the early detection of breast cancer in 3-4 primary care clinics in Soweto
- Initiate and manage a cluster randomized trial in the 3-4 clinics
Location:
- Johannesburg
- Must be willing to travel to study sites in Soweto Primary Health Clinics and, possibly, Orange Farm
Required minimum education and training:
- PhD in Social Sciences or Psychology or other relevant fields
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
- Must be experienced in qualitative research
- It will be an advantage to have cancer research experience or implementation science research experience involving needs analysis research and/or field operationalization of interventional trials (not just drug trials)
- Must be familiar with implementation science conceptual frameworks, social sciences, and/or behavioral change models
- Friendly outgoing personality
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Good emotional intelligence
- Must be familiar with the Public Health System
- Having experience in managing study support staff (trained fieldworkers) will be an advantage
